Women initiate divorceStereotypical men-women lore holds that females are the gender that is always angling to get hitched. And they’re “always” the gender that apologizes first. And they’re the weaker sex. And the ones who will do anything to “make it work.” And yada yada yada. Women, it turns out, are the tough ones, especially when it comes to pulling the plug on a marriage. (more…)

financial infidelityLove and money do not always go together like a horse and carriage. In fact, money can often be the death blow to love and marriage. Whether couples disagree about how their money is saved or spent, or whether financial infidelity has put a kink in the union, both situations can lead to a bitter divorce. (more…)

contempt couple fightingMost people do not enter into a marriage thinking about divorce. You likely focus on the present and dream about future. You feel joy (hopefully) and are optimistic about the good times ahead. (Though a case of cold feet could indicate certain doom.) But along the way, in every marriage, there are bumps. Speed bumps, hills, and some serious mountains. Some couples hurdle these obstacles together. Others do not. And, as it turns out, there seems to be one main reason why some couples don’t make it for the long haul: contempt.  (more…)

social media use marriage qualityIf you spend any amount of time on social media, you’ve witnessed the couples who communicate with each other via mushy Facebook posts even though they’re sitting across the table from each other at dinner or sitting together on the couch. This activity might seem ridiculous to those who don’t engage in it, but a new study implies that the more similar a couples’ social media habits are, the happier and more stable they are likely to be. smartphone divorceCouples are getting divorced over excessive smartphone or computer usage (addiction to Facebook could end your marriage). Other husbands and wives are agreeing to a social media prenup to try to prevent Twitter and its ilk from pervading their union. And in many divorce cases, the digital trail plays a major role in the divorce settlement. So, naturally, apps that were initially meant for good – keeping track of your child’s movements after school, for example – are being used for (sometimes) evil, allowing people the option of trailing the spouse they fear is cheating on them or lying to them. Michigan divorceYou and your spouse have decided to get a divorce. But the act of separating your lives is very different than the intention to do so. newly divorcedYou don’t need the calendar to roll over to a new year to have an excuse to start a new life. After all, a fresh existence is effectively being handed to you as soon as you sign your divorce papers. Everything is going to be different now – how you live, celebrate holidays, manage childcare, shop for groceries. The additions to the list will continue to surprise you as they arise. But plenty of your life is within your control, and how you choose to respond to life after divorce will make all the difference between coping well and falling to pieces.    (more…)

last holiday before divorceYou know you’re splitting up. Your kids might already know you’re going to separate. The rest of your family is suspicious. But you haven’t broken the “we’re getting a divorce” news to anyone yet. Maybe you’re waiting for your eldest to graduate from high school. Or you’re waiting for the youngest to finish his sports season. Perhaps you just can’t afford to leave yet. Whatever situation you find yourself in, if you are spending the holidays with your still significant other, albeit reluctantly, begrudgingly, and awkwardly, you have to be prepared to navigate this toxic environment for the sake of your own sanity.  (more…)

graying divorceThe majority of baby boomers are unlikely to tell their grandchildren of marrying age that the secrets to reaching silver and gold wedding anniversaries is hard work and a sense of humor. That’s because nearly 1 out of 4 people going through a divorce in the United States is over the age of 50, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This phenomenon known as “gray divorce” belongs to a generation that isn’t afraid to fight for equality, happiness, and take what they want for themselves – including freedom from an unsatisfying marriage.  (more…)

#divorceselfieSelfies are a popular cultural trend. We take these photos anywhere and everywhere to document our lives, from the biggest events to the smallest occurrences. And now, the divorce selfie is on the rise.

What is a divorce selfie? It’s simple: A former couple photographs themselves post-divorce – happily – and posts it on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or any other social media site for their friends, family, and, potentially, the world to see, share, and comment on. Over 38,000 people have shared Sharon Neuman’s recent divorce selfie on Facebook and supported her and her ex-husband’s positive approach to the future. Searching for “#divorceselfie” will return thousands of results.

And, it would seem, this is one hashtag trend that’s permeating society in a good way.  (more…)
