Marriages that were already hanging on by a thread have been tested severely by the side effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even unions that seemed solid have had their foundation shaken during this troubling time. Michigan divorces, and divorces across the nation, have been rising, especially among newlyweds, according to data collected by Legal Templates. The number of people looking for divorces between March and June 2020 was 34 percent higher than the same time last year.

For many couples, mediation is an amicable way to get through their split and save them time and money. It’s important to understand exactly how divorce mediation works and what the options are before you attempt to go this route to finalize the matters in your divorce proceedings.
(more…)Both parties in a divorce have goals for their split. One may be determined to get the family pet, while another is more concerned about the family car. What happens, though, when both of you want ownership of one particular object – namely, your family home? If coming through your Michigan divorce with the house in your name is a non-negotiable, it’s time to find out how to play ball and get what you want from the dissolution of your marriage.

Of the millennials who do commit to “for better or worse,” many are opting to include a prenuptial agreement in their union. This move is changing the perception of prenups.
(more…)You and your spouse have decided to get a divorce. One of you has agreed to move out of your marital home, but who gets the kids and when? Who pays what bills? Who gets the second car? These matters will all be finalized when your Michigan divorce is wrapped up but, in the meantime, interim orders make it clear who is responsible for everything right now.
(more…)No matter how long you’ve been divorced, back-to-school time gets a little complicated. Now COVID-19 has made the transition from summertime to school days even more stressful. Parents are looking at an abnormal school year ahead. These combined complications make it a challenge for divorced Michigan parents to honor their parenting plan and keep kids’ best interests at the forefront. Here are tips to make it work.
(more…)Every relationship has been tested by the challenges of COVID-19. While some couples have become closer during this time of chaos and fear, others have had existing marital issues magnified or seen new problems come to light. For some, the difficulties have become so evident that divorce is the only answer. The breakdown of many celebrity marriages during this time make the relationship stress of the coronavirus crystal clear.
(more…)The ideas of “peace” and “divorce” do not go together seamlessly for some people. There are couples who are angry, resentful, and unhappy. They anticipate that their divorce will be ugly. But approaching a split with so much vitriol isn’t healthy or productive. Then there are couples who are all in for peace and love – but they discover along the way that things could get a little contentious, even with the best of intentions. It is possible to have a peaceful divorce among the chaos, especially with help from the right Michigan divorce lawyer.
(more…)If you have children and are in the middle of a divorce or planning to file for Michigan divorce, your journey will include a lengthy discussion about child custody and parenting time. Summertime is a hot-button topic when it comes to getting time with the kids and there are many elements to consider as your divorce settlement is finalized.
(more…)Many engaged couples consider registering for wedding gifts as a rite of passage. Whether they go to stores in person or carry out the task online, they’re working together to create a combined new life. When that same couple decides to get a divorce, they must work backward and separate everything they joined together over the length of their union, far beyond dishes and towels. In a Michigan divorce, this is known as marital property division.
